Stop Wasting Money on Fall Gear

Coats, boots, hats and scarves are fun to shop for, but only until you bring home a slew of items you forgot you already had. Here are 4 essential things to do before you start shopping for the cooler months ahead:

1. Take stock of your fall and winter coats. Since so much has happened since last October, take out each coat and ask: does this coat still represent the way I want to think of myself? Does it feel good to put in on, or does it drag me into the past and weigh me down?

2. Play the Keep-Toss-Donate Game
Keep: the coats and accessories you still love.
Toss: single gloves, hats with holes, expired sunscreen, empty hand sanitizer mini bottles.
Donate: Coats you no longer love, outgrown kid jackets and winter accessories, and masks you find uncomfortable.

3. Create a list of items you need to replace. Being intentional about what you bring into your home will save you money and make it easier to keep the clutter at bay.

4.Once you have a bag of items to donate, find a great organization that needs them. Our Resources page is a good place to start.
Or, if you live in a community with a large homeless population, keep extra winter gear in your trunk. When you see someone living on the street, pull over to see if they want your goods.
