How to Have the Most Organized Year Ever

The onset of a new year gives us an opportunity to shift how we define ourselves. If you see yourself as "messy" or "disorganized", and want to change, now is the perfect time to rewrite your story to make 2024 your most organized year yet.

 
 

Here are my favorite strategies to get started:

1. Start small

Remember: Rome was not built in a day. Breaking down your home organizing project into smaller chunks will help you manage those feelings of overwhelm that have sabotaged your efforts in the past. Small victories here and there will quickly add up to big results.

2. Come up with a plan

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want? If I closed my eyes and envisioned this space in its perfect state, what would that look and feel like?

  • What is the identity, or purpose, of this space? (i.e. a bedroom closet is for storing clothes, a hallway closet is for storing linens and medicine)

  • In order for this space to serve that identity, what can remain as is, and what needs to be moved or decluttered?

Take 15 minutes to write it all down. Then, pull out your calendar to schedule a time to get it done.

3. Purge according to plan

Grab some trash and donation bags. Pull out items shelf-by-shelf and drawer-by-drawer. Sort into “Donate,” “Trash,” “Recycle,” “Move elsewhere.” Be ruthless – if something is not useful or does not bring you joy it is CLUTTER.

4. Labels are your best friend

A label is essentially a mini-sign telling you, and everyone in your household, exactly where things can be found. It's worth the time investment to add them.

 
 

5. Put stuff back

Once you decide where stuff goes, put it back. Every time. It does not have to be that second (I get it, everyone is busy), but make sure you do it by the end of the day. That way, when you go to look for something, it will be in its proper home.

Making change happen is challenging, but every decision you make will help move you closer to achieving your organizing goals. Remember: progress over perfection.
