How to Maximize Your Time for Spring Cleaning

Are you feeling like there’s not enough time for spring cleaning and organizing this season? You are not alone.

With our schedules busier than ever, dedicating an entire day to one all-consuming task is just not something many of us can fit into our schedules. All too often, an "all or nothing" approach leads to overwhelm, procrastination, and frustration.

It’s time to ditch the impractical, hours-long, marathon spring cleaning session and, instead, spring clean your entire house in 30-minute sprints. Here is how:

1. Be specific. Start by spending 30 minutes walking through your house to come up with a very specific list of small decluttering tasks. For example, you can list things like "desk drawer" rather than "home office," "shoes" rather than "closet,” and "children's books" rather than "playroom.”

2. Prioritize your list. Tackle what is bothering you the most first. Do anything sentimental last.

3. Focus on one area at a time. Set aside 30 minutes each day (or even every 3 days) to tackle one area on the list. Be as consistent as possible so that it becomes a habit. Set a timer so you don't exhaust yourself.

By maximizing the bits of time that you have here and there - rather than trying to stretch out time you don't have - you can prepare your entire house for the months ahead without adding to the stress of your day.
