Packing Tips for Summer Vacation

Packing tips for summer vacation from a professional organizer

It’s officially July, and summer is making a splash! What are your plans for the rest of the summer break? Whether you are planning an exotic vacation or taking a cross-country road trip, nothing puts a damper on a fun, relaxing getaway like poor organization. It’s important to pack effectively, so that you don’t lose your belongings when you travel, or waste all of your vacation time searching for items you need. To help you get organized, try these packing tips for summer vacation:

  1. Before you put anything in a suitcase, check the weather! That will help you determine what to bring.

  2. Keep your itinerary next to you while you pack. That will help ensure that you have something to wear for every occasion and activity.

  3. Don’t attempt to pack your entire wardrobe. Select a palette of 2 to 3 colors so that each bottom can be worn with a variety of tops. Use a small selection of accessories and shoes to add interest.

  4. Choose your fabrics wisely. Cotton and synthetic fabrics won’t emerge from your suitcase in a crinkled mess, like silk and linen will.

  5. Pack shoes at the bottom on the suitcase, as they are heaviest. To save space, socks can be tucked into shoes.

  6. Simplify your morning and evening bathroom routine by storing day cosmetics and toiletries in one pouch, and night ones in another other.

  7. Going on a road trip? Pack one “en route” suitcase or bag with outfits, toiletries, and daily medications for each family member and place this on top. This way, you’re not unpacking multiple bags or suitcases at every stop on the way to your destination. Emergency and first aid kits should also be stored on top, so they are easy to access.

  8. Don’t forget the snacks and essentials inside the car either. If you’re driving solo, pack a gallon size Ziplock for each child that you can refill at the end of the day with snacks from the larger snack kit. Pack more than you think you’ll need, and put it in an easy-to-access location. You can also fit two dozen plastic bags for trash, car sickness, and soiled clothes in an empty tissue box.

BONUS TIP: Be sure to pack smart for the return trip, too. Keep track of what you have worn, and what is still clean, by designating one dresser drawer for dirty laundry. If possible, you can also dedicate one suitcase for everyone’s dirty clothes, and one for everyone’s clean items. This will simplify the laundry process once you get home.

These packing tips for summer vacation will help you ensure that your trip is seamless and stress-free.
