Should I Keep This?: How to Let Go And Declutter Your Home

September is here, which means you’re either getting into the swing of the new school year or preparing for the new season. Perhaps you are looking for a fresh start, but still feel bogged down by the piles and purchases that accumulated while you were doing something much more fun during the summer? If you are feeling overwhelmed, use these questions to learn how to declutter your home. They will help you make a decision about what to keep and what to let go of.

  • Am I keeping this out of guilt? Is that a good enough reason to keep something?

  • Is keeping this here hindering me from being able to quickly find something else that I need?

  • If I were moving would I pay to have this packed and transported to my new home?

  • If this broke, would I spend the money again to replace it?

  • One or two of these items are useful, but how many duplicates are necessary?

  • Do I like how this skirt/jacket/pair of jeans still fits?

  • Do I have anything else that reminds me of this person/event/time in my life?

Keep only what you love, need, or use. Releasing what doesn't fall into these categories is liberating and will help you make room for what you DO love, need, and use.

To ease the burden of letting go, consider donating items that you no longer use. Not only will you help someone in need, but you will also feel better knowing that the donated item is bringing joy to someone else. For a list of locations to donate your unwanted items, check out this page
